Hot waxing is one of the best ways to keep your drivetrain clean, quiet and fast. Still, many cyclists have never started using it for one simple reason. The first treatment of a new chain has always felt too much work.

Removing factory grease with solvents, shaking the chain in containers, drying it properly and making sure the chain is truly clean makes the whole process feel unnecessarily complicated. REX Transformer Block changes that completely.

Transformer Block makes it possible to hot wax a brand new chain without the traditional solvent cleaning process. No aggressive cleaners. No messy start process. No performance compromise.

Place the new chain, REX hot wax and one Transformer Block into the wax heater. Heat, stir and let the chemistry do the work. Transformer Block does not simply cover the factory grease with a layer of wax. It transforms it into a wax compatible structure. This means the grease no longer remains as an oily barrier between the metal surfaces of the chain and the hot wax.

The result is a clean, fast and hot waxed chain without the traditional solvent hassle.

Factory grease is useful while the chain is still in its packaging. It protects the chain during storage and transport. Inside the wax heater, however, the same grease becomes a problem if it is not treated correctly. Regular hot wax cannot properly bond to the inner surfaces of the chain if oily factory grease remains in the way.

Transformer Block solves exactly this problem. It uses in situ oleogelation, where the oil phase of the factory grease is bound into a firmer, wax compatible structure. In practice, the factory grease stops behaving like a contaminant. The hot wax can then reach the places where lubrication really matters, between the pins, rollers and inner plates of the chain.

In Rex’s own single application longevity test, Transformer Block achieved an excellent result. It outperformed a chain waxed directly over factory grease, a competing product designed for factory grease treatment and even a comparison chain that had been cleaned with solvents. This makes Transformer Block especially interesting for cyclists who want an easier start without giving up performance.

One block treats one new chain. Each package contains four Transformer Blocks, so one package is enough for four new chains.

Transformer Block has been developed as part of the REX waxing system. It works together with REX hot wax and is especially well suited for the REX Pro Wax Heater. The Boost mode of the REX Pro Wax Heater raises the wax to the 125 °C treatment temperature, where Transformer Block can work in a controlled and repeatable way.

The product can also be used with other wax heaters, as long as the temperature can be measured accurately and the wax can be heated to 125 °C. This is important because the oleogelation process of Transformer Block requires the correct treatment temperature.

After use, the same wax batch can be used later for rewaxing chains. Use a maximum of four Transformer Blocks per 480 g package of REX hot wax.

Transformer Block is intended only for brand new chains with original factory grease. It is not a cleaner for used, dirty or previously oiled chains. Used chains must still be cleaned thoroughly and dried completely before hot waxing.

Use with the REX Pro Wax Heater

Place REX Black Diamond Hot Wax, one REX Transformer Block and one brand new chain into the REX Pro Wax Heater. The wax can be new or previously used.

Use one Transformer Block per brand new chain. One block is designed to treat one new chain when used with 480 g of wax, which equals one full package of REX Black Diamond Hot Wax.

Press the Boost button. The REX Pro Wax Heater raises the wax to the 125 °C treatment temperature.

When the device reaches 125 °C and gives three beeps, move the chain thoroughly in the wax together with the Transformer Block for at least 30 seconds. Make sure the chain is fully submerged and that the wax can penetrate the rollers and inner surfaces.

Let the wax cool down to 75 °C and move the chain occasionally during the treatment. Lift the chain out of the wax, let excess wax drip back into the container and let the chain cool completely before installation.

Use with other wax heaters

Place REX Black Diamond Hot Wax, one REX Transformer Block and one brand new chain into your chosen wax heater. The wax can be new or previously used.

Heat the wax to 125 °C. Measure the temperature accurately, because the oleogelation process of Transformer Block requires the correct treatment temperature.

When the wax reaches 125 °C, move the chain thoroughly in the wax together with the Transformer Block for at least 30 seconds. Make sure the chain is fully submerged and that the wax can penetrate the rollers and inner surfaces.

Let the wax cool down to 75 °C and move the chain occasionally during the treatment. Lift the chain out of the wax, let excess wax drip back into the container and let the chain cool completely before installation.
